Portal I: TRUE NATURE

It’s the long, slow slide that’s so surprising.

When we enter, we expect the transformation to be sudden, glorious, all-encompassing. The flash of light, the burst outward into infinity.

Instead, it’s dark and gnarled. We have to curl in on ourselves. The view is dim, not crystalline and glittering. We thought going through the portal was the moment we had prepared ourselves for: all that yearning, seeking, expanding, choosing. As we’re pulled in by its gravity, we realize that nothing could ever have prepared us for entering the portal for it’s not a moment at all, but a fall.

We are only ever ready to face the opening of the portal; there is no preparation for what’s beyond, because beyond is everything that’s never been known.

That is the nature of the portal.

Somewhere deep in our hearts, we knew this. Somewhere deep in our hearts, we longed for this. Somehow, we found ourselves at the entrance to the portal, assuming we were there to choose whether or not to walk through. That is also the nature of the portal.

There was only ever one choice to be made: to receive life, or not. To receive is to become the portal itself.

To receive is to give yourself to know that the entrance to every portal is found in the heart. That all portals lead to others. That to become the portal is to invite others to enter.

Open the portal. Assume that you have a choice. Receive your life.

That is your nature, and mine.

My Process:

Series: First in the Portal series. We are the creators of our own portals: through each one, we receive our lives more and more fully.

Inspiration: The maternal matrix. Oneness and individuation. Courage and surrender.

Materials: Vitreous glass tesserae, stone, stained glass, jasper, ceramic tile, turquoise. Light, shadow, time. Me. You.
