IMPERFECT PALINDROME

The purpose of the partnership of the forward and backward is to dance in the in-between, that sacred space that we can’t quite gaze at directly. We can only hope to approach such liminality obliquely and, above all, playfully.

“Duality is just foreplay for alchemy,” she laughs from k/nowhere.

It was never a mirror, you see—there’s too much at play in the fraction of infinity before the reflection sets to be locked in such a binary embrace.

The message of the imperfect palindrome is this:

We are refractory beings. We are amplifications of one another, beams of light and dark glancing and glinting off each other’s facets, eroding and polishing away sharp edges until we sink, mountain-like, back into each other’s embrace.

My Process:

Series: Fourth in the Portal series. We are the creators of our own portals: through each one, we receive our lives more and more fully.

Inspiration: The sacred in-between. Reflection and refraction. The space between two partner hearts.

Materials: Vitreous glass tesserae, Wissmach stained glass, mirrored tile, malachite, marble, stone, shell. Light, shadow, time. Me. You.
